The Universal Pulse Echoes in the Cycle of Days

Revealing the Universal Pulse: The Cycles of Days Unfolded

Author: TAHIR LATEEF

Global Political Shifts In 2024

In 2024, significant political changes occurred across multiple nations, shaped by past decisions and priorities. In the United States, Donald Trump made a remarkable political comeback, becoming the first president to be re-elected after losing a term. His victory sparked international recognition, with leaders like Pakistan's Mian Shahbaz Sharif expressing a desire to enhance bilateral relations. Trump not only won the Electoral College decisively but also the popular vote, focusing on economic and immigration issues under the slogans "America First" and "Make America Great Again. "

Russia & India

In Russia, President Vladimir Putin was re-elected, potentially extending his rule until 2030 while addressing challenges such as the Ukraine conflict and sanctions that affected the Russian economy. India saw Narendra Modi secure a third term as Prime Minister, though his party did not achieve the anticipated majority, indicating a decline in his popularity. The opposition alliance, led by Rahul Gandhi, made significant gains, suggesting a shift in the political landscape.

Pakistan

Pakistan's political scene also evolved; Mian Shahbaz Sharif returned as prime minister, forming a coalition government that included significant political forces in Punjab. In the UK, Keir Starmer led the Labour Party to victory after a long dry spell, while in France, President Macron narrowly retained control despite a fragmented electoral outcome.

European Countries

Amid these developments, major European economies saw the rise of nationalist parties, particularly in Italy, Hungary, and Poland. Bangladesh faced political turmoil as Hasina's government collapsed under revolutionary pressure, and ongoing conflicts unfolded in Ukraine, Gaza, and Sudan.

Iran

In Iran, reformist President Masoud Pezhakian emerged victorious in an unexpected election, signaling a shift in the country’s political image. Across Europe, major elections in Poland resulted in Donald Tusk, a pro-European leader, returning to power to address economic decline and unite a divided public.

Political Comeback

Overall, 2024 was marked by a global atmosphere of nationalism and economic concern, as citizens increasingly looked for leaders who prioritized economic improvements over personal or ideological conflicts. Major shifts in political power reflected a broader desire for stability and economic revival amid existing internal crises across various regions.

Prabowo Subianto has been elected Indonesia's president, succeeding Joko Widodo after his two terms. Subianto faced challenges from two governors in a nation where all elections, including for the National Assembly and regional councils, occur on a single day. Indonesia, the largest Islamic country, exhibits a thoughtful voting process among its young population, which makes up half of its citizens. This maturity in electoral participation emphasizes economic development, reflecting the influence of Southeast Asia's prioritization of rational decision-making.

Ukraine

Meanwhile, Ukraine's vital role in global agriculture is highlighted by its significant wheat and edible oil exports, even as the ongoing conflict has resulted in immense human loss and devastation in cities like Kyiv. The humanitarian aspects of Russia's military aggression, particularly following the attack on civilians, raise questions about international accountability and scrutiny, similar to the reactions against Israel and the U. S.

Middle East

In the Middle East, tensions escalated following Israeli airstrikes that killed Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, leading to confrontations with Iran and Hezbollah. The resulting humanitarian crisis in Gaza has seen considerable casualties and a complete breakdown of hope for ceasefire talks. Former U. S. President Donald Trump now faces the ramifications of these conflicts, with calls for the Muslim community to unify amid shifting political alliances.

Bangladesh

Bangladesh saw significant political turmoil as protests forced Prime Minister Hasina Wajid to flee. Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel Laureate, is being seen as a potential new leader following the widespread unrest against government policies linked to historical grievances. As protests continue, India faces rising dissatisfaction with Bangladesh's treatment of minorities, further complicating diplomatic relations.

Other World Political Developments

At the global level, a new trade initiative involving the U. S., India, and the Middle East emerged amid China's assertiveness through its Belt and Road Initiative. The landscape appears to be shifting away from Western dominance, with new coalitions forming and the U. S. reducing its military presence while maintaining its economic role.

In the U. S., debates regarding the TikTok ban reignite concerns about free speech and government overreach, reminiscent of broader discussions on social media’s role in public discourse. Human rights advocates question the legitimacy of such bans, particularly from a country that positions itself as a champion of free expression.

The COP29 conference in Baku pledged substantial funding to support poorer nations against climate change, although critics argue it falls short of expectations. The acute urgency for climate action stands in stark contrast to the lack of global awareness observed during the pandemic.

In a significant geopolitical development, Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria fell, marking the end of decades of oppression. This transition led to massive public celebrations, revealing the horrors faced by Syrians under Assad. The subsequent rise of interim leadership aims to restore stability, even as the legacy of civil war victims looms heavy—over half a million dead and millions displaced, compounded by years of Russian and Iranian support for Assad.

With Iran’s influence in the region waning due to setbacks for its allied groups, including Hamas and Hezbollah, it remains cautious about engaging in new conflicts. Meanwhile, Russia focuses on its war in Ukraine, impacting its ability to assist allies in the Middle East. The convergence of these events illustrates a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape marked by power shifts and urgent humanitarian crises.
